He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 20 DLI and was a Lieutenant, when 20 DLI went into the trenches for the first time on 29 May 1916 near Armentieres. On the night of 30 May, one man was killed and one wounded in No Man's Land whilst repairing barbed wire. Lieutenant Thompson-Hopper went out twice alone under very heavy fire to bring in both men. He was awarded the Military Cross. On 30 June 1916, he was killed by a shell - the first officer of 20 DLI to be killed in action. He was 25 years old. James Thompson-Hopper is buried at Tancrez Farm Cemetery at Ploegsteert, Belgium.
